Explorers
In the first year, babies learn to focus their vision, reach out, explore, and learn about the things that are around them. Cognitive, or brain development, means the learning process of memory, language, thinking, and reasoning. Learning language is more than making sounds (“babble”), or saying “ma-ma” and “da-da”. Listening, understanding, and knowing the names of people and things are all a part of language development.

Walker Academy supports this development milestone by:
Talking to your infant
Responding to your infant's noises and facial expressions
Reading and singing to your infant
Introducing your infant to everyday objects and allowing your infant to interact with items around them
Allowing time for your infant to explore and discover new toys, people, and places in the classroom

During the second year, toddlers are moving around more, and are aware of themselves and their surroundings. Their desire to explore new objects and people also increasing. During this stage, toddlers will show greater independence; begin to show defiant behavior; recognize themselves in pictures or a mirror; and imitate the behavior of others, especially adults and older children. Toddlers should be able to recognize the names of familiar people and objects, form simple phrases and sentences, and follow simple instructions and directions.

Reading to your toddler
Asking your toddler to name body parts or objects in the classroom
Playing matching games or completing puzzles with your toddler
Sorting shapes and naming colors with your toddler
Encouraging curiosity by taking field trips and inviting community partners to our school to share experiences

As children grow into early childhood, their world will begin to open up. They will become more independent and begin to focus more on adults and children outside of the family. They will want to explore and ask about the things around them even more.
Walker Academy will ensure that our preschoolers are ready for life after preschool. Our activities are developmentally appropriate and based on TN Early Learning Development standards.

Their interactions with family and those around them will help to shape their personality and their own ways of thinking and moving.
Our 4 year old preschoolers are introduced to learning standards based on TN Early Learning Development and TN state Pre-k standards.

During this stage, children should be able to ride a tricycle, use safety scissors, notice a difference between girls and boys, help to dress and undress themselves, play with other children, recall part of a story, and sing a song.

Hi! My name is Erica Walker and I am the founder of Walker Academy. I LOVE teaching and learning. My goal is to connect with families. When I started building my vision for Walker Academy, I envisioned families like mine; professional, hard-working, and unconventional. My desire was to build a place where teachers wanted to be, children cried to stay at the end of the day, and parents felt like partners. Parents are the first teachers. At Walker Academy, we know this. We work with parents to create goals for their children. Academics are just a part of what we do. We want to make sure that your child builds confidence and life skills while in our care. An educational journey at Walker Academy ensures that your child is prepared for the world and whichever path they decide to take.
